Introduction

Snehapana is a specialized Ayurvedic pre-procedure for shodhana karmas like Vamana and virechana in which the medicated Sneha is orally administered to the health seeker for a specific period.

Dosage and duration of snehapana: The initial dosage of the Sneha should be determined based on the stage of the disease, digestive power, and body constitution of the health seeker. The dosage of the forthcoming days will be fixed based on the duration taken for digestion of the Sneha, and certain other changes observed in the health seeker. The duration of snehapana is determined based on the daily observed changes in the health seeker (it can vary from one day to seven days)

Types of Snehapana

Achchhapeya Sneha: Oral administration of the Sneha or any fat substances alone is called Achchhapeya Sneha

Vicharana Snehapana: The word Vicharana is formed by the Sanskrit words Vi meaning unique methods and charana means regular practice. When the fat substances are mixed with other food substances according to the taste, palatability, and satmya of the individual to achieve the snehana effect is called Vicharana or pravicharana snehapana.

Sadya Sneha: The procedure of administrating the snehana therapy in a short duration like one day and getting the desired effects of snehana instantaneously is called a sadya Sneha.

Mode of Action of Snehapana

As our body is made up of different types of cells and each cell membrane is made up of Phospholipids, lipid-soluble substances can easily cross the cell membrane because of this, the base of the Snehapana medicine which we use is in lipid form (ghee, oil form processed with medicated herbs indicated for the particular disorder).

When these lipids are processed with medicine which is having the active ingredients which act on the particular disorder crossing the cell membrane, the functions of phospholipids will increase and the affinity of cellular elements or impurities which are responsible for the formation of diseases takes place and the lipids along with these impurities change its density with the help of swedana or sudation therapy, then these impurities are expelled along with the lipids (which is used as medicine) from the cell membrane to the gut through the circulatory system.
