Hair has the highest cosmetic importance than any other part of the human body. It is hard for a person to tolerate hair fall and it may even lower the self-esteem of an individual. Here we are discussing scalp hair fall. Diffuse hair fall is when a person loses more than 100 strands of hair per day and can be categorized as hair loss. 1 in every 5 people throughout the world population suffers from hair fall.

Structure of a hair strand :

The structure and growth cycle of hair is a fascinating process. Each hair strand is generated within the skin from a follicle. It contains pigmented cells called melanocytes which give hair its natural color. It is also supplied blood vessels for nourishment.

A chain of events undergoes each follicle which aids in the development of hair.

Phase 1 . Anagen – growing stage lasting 2 to 7 years

Phase 2. Catagen –  regression stage lasting 10 days

Phase 3. Exogen – shedding stage lasting 3 months

Phase 4. Telogen – resting stage.

The most common type of hair loss is baldness. It can be seen in both men and women but most commonly in men. In male pattern baldness, they tend to lose hair at any age starting from the late adolescent stage. It begins with receding hairline to the entire scalp sometimes or to some extent.

Causes for hair fall :

Hair is the outcome of every single change in the body starting from diet and lifestyle to the stage of other health conditions. Hence there will be multiple reasons for hair fall.

  • Deficiencies eg . iron, vitamins, minerals, etc.
  • Scalp conditions eg. Scalp psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, dandruff, lice, scalp hygiene, etc.
  • Hormonalal changes eg. Postnatal hormonal drift, thyroid hormone abnormalities, Pcod, menopause, Diabetes, etc.
  • Drug history eg. On medication for any chronic illness
  • Environmental changes eg. exposure to pollution, dust, extreme climatic conditions, etc.

Hairfall and Ayurveda :

Ayurveda explained about maintaining healthy hair ages ago in its classical texts, as a part of a lifestyle that includes regular application of herbal oils, head massage, etc. As per Ayurveda hair and nails are the end product of asthi dhatu as mala (bone tissue metabolism). Any abnormality in this metabolism I,e dhatvagni lead to improper or decreased growth of hair follicles. In Ayurveda, hair fall is given a nomenclature ‘KHALITHYA where vitiated pitta dosha (heat element) along with Vata dosha gets seated at the root of the hair and causes hair fall. When it is associated with another dosha Kapha (mucous element of the body) it ceases the new hair formation from the follicle.
