Coeliac Disease
Coeliac disease (Ayurvedic Name- Anna- Vaha Shrotas-dushti) is an adverse reaction of the immune system, where the immune system attacks the body’s tissues. This is particularly exacerbated by a gluten-rich diet, meaning gluten triggers an autoimmune response that damages the lining of the small intestine (gut). Intestines stop absorbing the nutrients in the bloodstream properly and patients become anemic (hemoglobin deficiency) along with delayed growth and weight loss.
[Note – Gluten is a special type of protein group, called prolamins and glutelin, which occurs with starch, which is found in wheat, spelled, rye and barley, etc.]Coeliac Disease is an auto-immune condition, in which the affected individual reacts abnormally to the indigestion of gluten and other cereal of protein, the intestine becomes inflamed and damaged, resulting in poor absorption but when gluten is excluded from the diet the intestine recover and functions are restored.
It is a relatively common condition with a wide range of presenting symptoms. In some people, the gluten-driven immune reaction extends beyond the intestine and can involve the skin and other tissue.

In some cases, gene variation appears to increase the risk of this condition.

Ayurvedic Concept with Management
According to Ayurveda, Coeliac disease can be co-related with ‘AnnaVaha Srotas Dushti’, which means ‘disorder of channels of food transport or gastro-intestinal tract’
[Note- ‘Annavaha Srotas’ is the channel for transportation, digestion, and absorption of food. ‘Diamante’ is a comprehensive term used in Ayurveda at various places in different contexts like Artery, Nerve, tubular structure, etc]According to Ayurveda, Coeliac disease indicated the imbalance of certain body energies that leads to extreme weakness in immunity and digestive system and this condition results from the wrong decision of immune cells.
The digestive system first gets disturbed and caused ‘Agnimandhya’ (low digestive fire) and the formation of the ‘Ama’ (toxins) and disease manifest and gradually lead to several diseases.
Ayurveda explained treating ‘Pitta Dosha’ normalizes the liver and immune system. Primary treatment is to be planned to increase and stabilize the ‘Koshthagni’ (digestive fire), Ayurveda diet is planned accordingly.
Nutritive and easy-to-digested food is advised, even Lifestyle advice also plays a significant role in managing the symptoms and treating the disease.
