Tennis elbow is an inflamed (swollen) tendon at the elbow region called tendinitis. This condition feels pain in the elbow region due to excessive stretching and is commonly seen in the age group of 30-50 years. The incidence rate is more in women as compared to males. Tennis elbow occurs when there are overuses of the muscles covering the elbow joint which is often seen when the elbow joint is used in routine practice as it may be a part of the profession. The outer part of the elbow usually becomes sore and tender causing pain because of repeated strenuous movements or injuries already pre-existing that damage the forearm muscles.

Causes

Lifting heavy objects, playing continuous tennis, squash, fencing, and cricket. People involved more in gardening, plumbing, brick-laying, writing, typing, chopping, painting, knitting, driving screws, meat cutting, etc may also be affected. Continuous stress and strain to elbow joints by swinging movements as in handling a tennis racket which leads to the constant pull of the muscle leads to minute damage and tearing of the tendon, leading to pain and swelling.

Symptoms

The symptoms of tennis elbow develop gradually with mild pain which slowly worsens over some time. The pain may be radiating and associated with a burning sensation that starts from the outside of the elbow to the forearm and wrist.

Pain starts during extension of the wrist usually seen while trying to grip a bat open a door or while trying to start a car. Pain can also be seen while handling utensils like a fork, knife, or holding toothbrush which may indicate the early symptoms of the disease.
