Hemiplegia is a medical condition in which injury occurs to parts of the brain that controls the movement of the limbs, trunk, face, etc. It may affect one side of the body either left or right depending on the side affected. The disease may suddenly or may develop with time. Loss of sensation and control in the affected area is the characterized feature of hemiplegia. The brain is anatomically divided into two hemispheres. The right side of the brain controls the left side i.e means if the right is affected in the brain hemiplegia occurs on the left side. The incidence rate of hemiplegia is 56.9 per 1,00,000 and affects males more than females.
Causes
Hemiplegia may be due to sudden injury to the brain due to accidents of fall, hemorrhage, stroke, infections like meningitis, brain tumors, and congenital abnormalities like cerebral palsy. Ancient authors mention vitiated Vata to be the main causative factor of the disease. The changing lifestyle and bad food habits lead to the vitiation of Vata, which is considered to be the chief among the doshas. The symptoms mainly include loss of power and movement of the half side of the body, minor sensory deficit, dysarthria, atrophy due to disease, stiffness
Types of Hemiplegia
Hemiplegia is divided into two types depending on the cause of the disease i.e. ischemia and hemorrhage. As a result, there is a destruction of brain tissue caused by a lack of blood supply to the brain causing various abnormalities. These two causes can because by a wide range of diseases like hypertensive encephalopathy, vascular disorders, infective disorders of the brain tissue, tumors or abscess, trauma, internal artery occlusion, etc.
Symptoms
The patient may experience total /partial loss of sensation on one side, and changes in cognition, mood, or perception. Difficulty in speech, seizures, spastic attacks in which there is movement in muscles without conscious control.
